Kinja'd!!!

Posted a question about my 1965 Dodge Dart to a 2013+ Dodge Dart forum.

Just for jokes. Does anyone actually have an answer for this though? I’m thinking about taking the Dodge back to school with me after spring break and I want to stay cool, exceptionally here in the mountains.

It sounds like you may be missing the radiator shroud. Those are actually pretty important when idling- otherwise the fan just moves around the engine bay instead of pulling cool air from the outside across the radiator into the engine bay.

If you’re not missing it, on an older engine it is common to have this problem anyway. If you plan on idling much the engine driven fan isn’t spinning too quickly. On the same note an electric fan pulls a lot of juice and can stress your 65 dart’s electric system. If you have the stock alternator (or god forbid generator) and a stock size battery (small) you may trade your problem of running warm to one of running down your battery.

I don’t think it ever had a shroud. Still makes sense thought.

It has a modern battery that’s comparable in size to most other car batteries with a stock alternator. I don’t think it’d be too much draw. I probably just need a new radiator.

A new radiator may solve the problem. If it’s an airflow problem then that won’t fix it and you’ll be out the cost of a radiator.

You may try dropping thermostat temp (from 195 to 180 perhaps), also check that the temperature gauge sensor isn’t somewhere strange like in a heater hose. Water pump also strikes me as a possible culprit.

Running warm is one of those problems that you can spend a ton of money and time tracking down. So do your best to test the system and try the cheaper options before you go for the big buck fixes.

Simple things like running too thick oil can cause a vehicle to run warm.

I think I am running pretty thick oil now that I think of it. Also changed it last 2 years ago since I don’t use it that much (I know it’s bad, I’ll change it when I go home).

It’s not that bad of a problem, just a little concern. These little sixes will run without oil or coolant for days according to mechanic folklorists.

I have a new thermostat lying around, water pump aint a bad idea either.

Next trollpost idea: “I’m thinking about converting to electronic ignition so I don’t have to deal with points anymore. Does anyone have a recommendation? I’m leaning to Ignitor because of the price but is the JEGS version worth it?”

It’s so hard to find points for this car you have no idea.

Actually it’s not that hard now that I looked, but when I pulled it from a barn in 2010 points were something I couldn’t find anywhere and eventually found a NOS set in the glove box (my dad was planning on replacing them before he parked it.

Really it was the only thing that stopped it from starting in 14 years. We did change the fuel tank and checked the timing though before we tried to crank it.

1) coolant pressure cap

2) flow test radiator

3) flush and replace coolant

4) replace thermostat

My SL was very similar for a long time, these three things have helped greatly. It can still warm up significantly, but not anywhere near as bad as before.

I still want to replace the fan clutch just to be safe though, but if you don’t have one, then either your radiator doesn’t have good flow, maybe even bad thermostat (not opening wide enough, or getting stuck only partially open).

The only thing I would say about electric fans is to be really careful about what wires you get for it. A guy I know has a 64 Sport Fury and a couple summers ago one of wires burned up and lost connection, so it was running way hotter than normal, but no coolant loss. Strange situation indeed. Do not upset a 478CI Ray Barton race HEMI. Thing is an absolute monster.

Seriously, you should convert to electronic. The Ignitor II is an easy upgrade. Best part is your engine bay keeps its bone stock look.

Electric fan would work. If it’s new enough to have an expansion tank, swapping in a larger expansion tank can help some too.
